Locked By Me Poem by Charlie Akens

Locked By Me

My words never reached anybody
I let myself be driven
by things that people said about me
I wasn't wise enough at the time to know
To know all that I know now

I couldn't breathe
I couldn't blink without thinking too much
My words, my confessions
They were in my bedroom
Locked away by my insecurity
Locked by my sister's thoughts
Locked by the village people's thoughts

But not for him
He breathed the same poetry as I
The same intoxicating breeze
That inspired me
The same one I used to let take me away

With him, my mind was safe
My ideas, my being, and then
Fields that we cultivated died
He was selfish
Beyond my comprehension
But I loved him
And he came back
But I had built a wall around my neck
