Look how windy it's been



Look how windy it's been

green leaves that didn't belong there
lay on the airless little square

it was a summer like they're supposed to be
as all-out as the war raging elsewhere

while the city lay dreaming like a bomb
a dream must have lain sleeping innocuously

enough to scare one, into speech, for a minute,
while the river flowed past the friends

they talked about ways with words rotting teeth and who
'll die next, assessed the motionless shore opposite them

sang the day's praises until deep in the dusk, things were
how they'd always been -
