Love, Howard Poem by Rebecca Leidner

Love, Howard

When I was on the earth I was of it
With all my being at every moment.
The rich smells of the woods filled me from nose to tail
As we walked up the hill in the morning.
I knew the wild sounds and the sounds of home:
Rustlings and cawings, the car returning,
Music floating down, each note a comfort to me.
From my watching place I saw all
And all that my eyes took in became my dreams.

This life I lived because of you:
Your kind voices, your hands
Reaching out to me with love, with food,
Filling with sweet water a bowl that was my very own,
Taking my pain to spare me when my time was done.

And so I leave this secret for you in the silence,
In the stillness, in the empty clearing:
Only to love the earth and each other
With all your senses and with all your heart.
