Love Is Not Enough Poem by omotunde moses medese

Love Is Not Enough

They said money is the root of all Evil
Yet I saw death, who took my father because of poverty,
That same day I saw a fully grown-up man strip off his dignity all because he had to eat.

Every Sunday I heard my pastor preach love your neighbour as yourself,
Yet, he and three elders are fighting over church revenue
But yesterday I found out love is not enough
How come my neighbour and his newly wedded wife fought from 1 am to 8 am this morning all I could hear is, is this the stupid love you promised me before marriage,
He could not fulfil the material things in an economy where minimum wage can't cater for basic things.

Two beloved friends dropped out of school yesterday.
All because they can't afford the school fee
Now one is robbing arms while the other female is kissing her ass.
Love could not save them.

Love is not enough
When hunger kills like a thunderbolt
Every morning and night I wrote her epistles,
But what is love without financial assurance?

To her, I am like the apostle Paul writing to the Galatians
From her far distance, she could scent my wretchedness.
Every night I sip my tears because my dreams are not lucid enough.
To people like us love is not enough.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
'Love is Not Enough' is a raw, introspective piece that grapples with the painful realities of life, where love alone is inadequate to overcome financial hardship, societal corruption, and the struggles for survival. Through vivid scenarios, the poem explores how love, while cherished and preached, fails to provide the material security that many desperately need.
