Lover's Nostalgia Poem by Salika Mehboob

Lover's Nostalgia

Missing you isn't profound
It's not like a breath knocked out of your lungs
Or iron fists clenching down on my throat
No it's subtler than that
It's like basking in the morning sun of a chilly winter day
A moment nothing like the extraordinary yet one you know you're gonna remember forever
The kiss of soft sunlight on your face that melts all the cold in your chest
That's what remembering you feels like
A stolen memory in a box of chocolates that lays abandoned on your coffeetable
But keeps you satiated on a day you're craving sweets
A stuffed toy that collects dust in your wardrobe
That triggers nostalgia the moment you pull it out of the depths
And I've said that missing you isn't profound
Yet there are days when it's all that goes on on my mind
One specific memory playing in a loop over the background
It isn't a song that you cry to sleep to every night
It's a book you keep visiting, a story you need to memorise
Of fear of losing it too quick, too soon
It isn't heart wrenching or regret ful
It isn't a happy ending or a sad
It's just an ending
One that played soft music in your life.
