Lwoavre [sonnet] Poem by James Sinclair

Lwoavre [sonnet]

if sweet sugar is the lust of the mouth
if music is the yearning of the ear
if the sun rises east, then she is south
If love is war then she is the frontier
If a rose is sweet then she is sour
If ice is cold she is the caustic flame
if weeds are plain she is a rich bower
if love hath no name then hers is my claim
If cotton is soft then she is barbed steel
If a lamp shares light then she's dark as night
If true love is real then mine she did steal
if she is the sky then I am a kite
my love has no power. my heart. tastes sour

love has stuck deep so I hide and cower

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
The first poem in my anthology is a sonnet called 'lwoavre'. The title itself presents the theme of the poem with the word 'love' intwined with the word 'war'. This is used to represent love as a battle and relates to the underlying theme of conflict. The inspiration for this poem was based on the traditional use of a Sonnet to present love or affection, but I was finding it hard to relate love to the theme of the anthology as it was completely contradictory, so I crushed the conventional view of love and romance and replaced it with a more sinister and macabre image. The phonology of the words makes use of many different poetic devises, such as alliteration ('sweet sugar') . The consistent use of sibilance can be seen through out the sonnet which adds rhythm to the piece and creates a sense of urgency and anticipation for the reader....
...Well that's what I said when I handed it in to my teacher for homework. :)
