Making A Meal Of Emotion Poem by Mary Champion

Making A Meal Of Emotion

Mastering my emotions
I believed myself the mistress of reason.
Mind in the ascendancy,
making my majestic way
towards my nemesis -
the day that my maverick heart
made itself known
with all its medieval mania -
irrational to the core.

Manfully I wrestled with my demons,
trying to balance head and heart.
But it was left to reason
to make a one-sided deal.
The heart will never compromise.
The heart can never compromise
for it has no capacity to comprehend the concept.
