Malignant Time! Poem by Ali Rahimi

Malignant Time!

When I was a child
Time was so stubbornly slow
It crept and crawled
It would pass at a snail's pace
And I held tight to the moments
Could feel their hues and overtones
Would make epic endeavors
To escape their dictatorial clutch
To remove the shackles
From my flimsy sore ankles
To eradicate the stigma
Of being green, 'wet behind ears'
As the grown up snobs would tell me then
But when old,
There is no contest against time
The chariot gallops on
And the weak, senile doddering soul
Can but sigh in helpless and disbelief:
Nothing new', ‘'everyday exactly the same'
This humdrum sense of de ja vu
Erodes, atrophies and terminates,
Sweet ineluctable terminator!
Malignant Time!
