Where should our full focus lie?
To stem the flow of mass shooters?
While most awake to a bright blue sky,
Copycats are fixed to their computers,
When those who mourn for all who die,
The latest news becomes the recruiters,
Another soul makes his silent decry
To avenge his life's persecutors.
The plastic surgeon works the graveyard shift,
A teacher questions the lessons he taught,
The reality star blesses her frightful face lift,
While our clergy kneel for naught,
To share the air is a precious gift,
Though so few breathe with that thought,
We create our demons and set them adrift,
When they finally act out before they are caught.
Last night I thought about an alternate tomorrow-
Weapons are no longer turned on the defenseless,
The peaceful no longer gathered in vigils of sorrow,
The gun problem has finally been addressed:
Laws were passed, though the margins were narrow,
Every rouge weapon tracked and locked by GPS,
Our differences now mediated by the World Peace Bureau,
Our leaders reduced to fight with their fists.
