Material Illusions Poem by Mustafa Marconi

Material Illusions

How can I look deep inside of tomorrow?
Lacking understanding of my past
My feet stuck in the heavy quicksand of today
Where many struggle to merely survive
As ignorance and misfortune burdens
The masses yearning to be free
The materialistic illusions of accomplishments and success
Paves the paths to bondage and servitude
A society of shackle-less slaves
Laboring to consume; consuming to live
As each and every second methodically tick
And life slips further and further away
Freedom has beckoned
She awaits us with arms fully extended
Clamoring to embrace all that seek the warmth
Of her soft and beautiful skin
Freeing minds incarcerated by unhealthy vices
And scorching, unforgiving ignorance
Where every man can look deep inside of their hearts
The temple of God, and connect
Clearly understanding yesterday and today
And recognizing the many different roads
That leads to tomorrow
Not defined by material possessions
Nor consuming to feel a sense of worth
Living each and every second
With shoulders squared and eyes wide open
Embracing life and all of the wonderful gifts of freedom
How can we gauge the prospects of tomorrow?
Lacking a clear understanding of the significance of yesterday
For never has one single farmer
Throughout the history of man
Reaped before he has sowed
Adopting the malignant characteristics of today
Me and mine first, every man and woman for themselves
Ask not what you can do for your country and your fellow man
But how much can you horde for yourself
Your illustrious symbols of success depreciate dramatically
As you continue to exist in limbo
Precious seconds methodically disappearing forever
As true life slips further and further away
