Maternity Poem by Hans Raj Sharma

Maternity

O’ mom!
Aren’t you
Shedding tears?
Tears in despair
Or delight?
No, no mom
Don’t tell a lie
It’s not delight
You’re hiding
Hiding something
So grave
A volcano inside
Your tender heart
Saving me from
Burning into it.

O’ mom!
Aren’t you lying?
Tell me the truth
Aren’t the tears
In utter fear?
No, no mom
They aren’t of glee
Aren’t you hiding?
Hiding something
So secret
So painful
Painful inside
Your brain
Your mind
And your being.

O’ mom!
Aren’t you hiding?
Hiding from me
The truth
Lest it shou’d
Harm your infant
Its growth
Development
And formation
Of ideology
At initial stage.

O’ mom!
Caring a fig for
Your figure
Knowingly
Aren’t you getting?
Soon disfigured
Hunched back
And wrinkled face.

O’ mom!
Don’t take me for
An infant
I do understand
Your silence
Warmth of your
Milk and tears
Velocity of
Your emotions
And sentiments
Being a part
Of your being
I can read
The whole book
That you authored.
