One late afternoon
I was talking to my shadow
It appeared not to listen
It stretched away as if yawning
But it knows better than to ignore me
It knows it can’t get away
We are like Siamese twins
Attached at the soles of our feet
Sometimes my shadow is funny
It contorts to shapes and angles
I could never imagine
Standing near a glass like lake
It shimmers and reflects
But when I throw a skipping stone
It weaves and bends into a gross distortion
But it always comes back to calm
Of course sometimes it hides from me
Usually around high noon
But in a few moments it peeks out
Seeking me out to dance together
Frolic in the fading light
Sharing precious moments in wind and fire
And when I’m naughty it just stares
If it could talk it would scold me
For not seeing the brighter path
And it’s not too crazy about our double dates
So at night when I put it to bed
I thank it for its companionship
Knowing I will never be alone
And I get no argument
When we both sit in solitude and think
Of what might have been
If we chose different directions
