Merciless World... Poem by Anita Singh 2

Merciless World...

All alone by herself she sat in the darkest corner
Of the end of the street on a closing winter night
Surrounded by the sombre atmosphere of the dying year
She was bereft of an amiable company
As she was an illegitimate child of her parents

She sat brooding on a small stone
Despite the chilly winter breeze that blew
A mere thought of people's countenance
Made her spine tingle with self-confession.

Self- confession?

What wrong had she done?
Her interspersed memories of past made her
To despise herself for being born on this earth
She belonged to nobody and nobody belonged to her!

I peered into the darkness
Which had a veil of dreary sensation
I saw her sobbing for the world which didn't care
For her painful and solitude soul.
Shimmering moonlight gloated over her
Soothing her wounds of bleak history
I saw her sleeping with a radiant smile
Which in turn soothed me as I'm too an illegitimate child
Born of parents who have left me all alone
In this cruel and emotionless world

Do we have no right to seek happiness?
Today we yearn for softness and warmth of mother's lap
Father's protection so that the rustle of leaves and
Rumble of thunder don't frighten us anymore
Somebody who can cherish us and
Appreciate us for being in this world.

We both uncared and unwanted like weeds
Were woken up by shrill criticism of the crowd
Which surrounded us like cloistered dim
Well, it's time to flit to some other desolate place
With my soul burning we made an escape like a dying ember

Still undaunted by unrequited love
We both are in search of a world in a hope
That one day we'll find a world which will
Fill us in its arms full of care and love...
