Mere Night Poem by David Olughu

Mere Night

Evening came with it's cool.
Dazzling stars,
calm and enticing breeze.
Fireflies illuminate the ground and skies,
crickets chirp like hungry birds;
disorderly order.

Silence engulfs the air.
Time itself is ruptured.
"Wait, did men just get raptured? "
"Why then am I still here? "
"It can't be; it shouldn't be."
Thoughts fill my head, yet I'm left blank.
I gasp for answers;
like a fish in an empty tank.
Then, I see one, no two;
"Wait, is that a queue? "
"Where does it lead to? "

Finally I'm in front.
Let's settle this once and for all.
I'm face to face with the one ushering men.
An angel, just like my Bible described...
An encyclopedia is lay wait in front of me.
"Could that be it? "
"The great book"
... my name wasn't found.

I would have requested for a re-check but, the angel was angrily pitiful.
I was made to carry my load.
I was directed to a wide road.
"But the road I'm supposed to follow is narrow."
In place of timbrels, were the sound of wails.
The hut of torment,
the dining table of demons.
I fight to go back, yet the more I struggle, the faster I go in.
My feet, at it's threshold.
Wails saturate the air,
souls perishing; I'm about to be one of them.
"No! ", I scream,
returned by a loud laugh from the fiery blaze.

Kwame! Kwame! !
Someone calls my name
I feel a soft pat on my cheek
"It was all a dream! ".
