She was walking on the beach
With a cell phone to her ear
She didn't see the ocean
The sun-lit clouds
Peeping above a lavender horizon
The pelicans that swooped
In proud formation
Just above the cresting of the
Waves
She didn't see
She didn't hear
She didn't care
She shut it all out.
And when others said,
"Mother Earth is dying -
We must do something! "
She hadn't the faintest idea
What they were talking about.
