Mistress Poem by Petra Novakova

Mistress

Every night my lady haunts my dreams
She gives nothing but takes twofold
Air from my lungs, blood from my veins
An intoxicating fragrance for the beyond

Every day my lady haunts my memories
She takes nothing and gives twofold
Grey images in the mirrors on the walls
Give nothing away, no clues left behind

Every night my lady comes to kiss me
She gives death and takes life, ravenous
Blurry shape flying away into the shadows
Beauty and the beast into one combined

Every day my lady leaves me to miss her
She takes death and gives life, monstrous
For one last time she carresses my brow
Not out of love or kindness that I know

I follow her in the wake of our last dawn
Creeping onto a perfectly manicured lawn
Fear weakening my resolve, love in my heart
For what she took freely, us having to part

I found her frozen in her strange sweetness
An angel to behold, delicate in her stillness
Tethering her to the world of the living
No longer taking from me, no longer giving

I left her small and soft in the darkness
She laid there surounded by soft feathers
Tethering her to the realm of the dead
At last to dust turned my mistress beloved

Her pale reflection
Slowly fades away
From my memory
