Moment To Shine Poem by sheri hayes

Moment To Shine

Momma opened up her wings
Revealing her youngest member
A weakling she loved so very much
And desired to just protect her

But this baby bird yearned to fly
As gracefully as her mother, and
Create music within her wings
And soar like no other

Yet her features were so different
Her wings were young and frail
Not strong enough to take off in flight
No lift to encompass a sail

She watched the others from her nest
And dreamed of dodging clouds
She even practiced chirping her chords
Inside her head and out loud

Each day’s sun rose with their hope
They searched for any sign
But baby’s wings just hung there
So sorrowfully by her side

She'd eat her worms to increase her size
And prayed for strength where weak
She prepared for her great adventure
For when that moment peaked

She wandered out, perched on a limb
The branch swayed up and down
She took a breath and tried to leap
But fell straight to the ground

She was not ready, not just yet
She was off to feed some more
While mom licked her tender body
Every place that she felt sore

Months had passed and seasons changed
Momma and baby just waited through days
Snow drifted out and spring had came
The birds chirped loudly songs of praise

Baby woke one sunny morning
By a twitch she felt in her side
It was her wings awakening at last
Causing the two to let out a sigh

Stretched towards the sky- her arms went
She smiled and exclaimed, “Momma it’s time!
My wings, my wings, they’re ready
I'm really gonna Fly! ”

She strutted out on the limb once more
As she took a look behind
Giving her momma a specific look
That read, This is my moment to shine!

She leaped out into the air again
Grasping every breath of spring
While singing the chords she practiced
To a beat of both her wings

She glided, paused, tangoed with air
Pit pattered in lakes and fountains
Flew up and under every bridge
Escalated to heights of mountains

Momma took a rest inside her nest
Ingesting the feeling of pride
Knowing now her worries are over
As her baby touched the sky
