Momma Poem by Danny Speicher

Momma

Momma

Late night movie watching scary movies
Perhaps long before a kid should watch them
But, I wasn't scared because you were there
You and Grandma both laughing at the silliness of Freddy and Chucky

Mini-vacations to exotic destinations like Abilene
With the family in tow: You, grandma, and Pat
And that really amazing trip to Topeka of all places
Where we saw Forrest Gump for the first time

That music and that feather always seemed to be
A symbol of our lives, you and I… Going with the flow
Even when the flow blew us far from where we thought we'd go
The music will always remind me of you… Now and someday when you're gone

Psalty the Singing Songbook at night to help me sleep
It's amazing that the videos of him during the day didn't scare me more than Freddy
You are always there with the right words and right actions
How do you always know just what to do?

Money troubles are perpetual when we give like we do
But, neither of us will ever change our colors, because we care too much
People criticize when we struggle not knowing what we've given
Because we know that airing our generosity makes it about us

We were never rich and I suppose we never will be
But, we have each other… Mike and Pat… And Steph, Mike, and Dianne, too
I'm so sorry I couldn't mend the rift with the rest of the family
I tried, momma, I tried… And I'll hold hope until the day I die

You're hurting so much right now and I can't do anything to help
If I could take your pain, all your conditions, and all your worry, I would
But, I know that God can take these burdens and carry them with you
Oh, Lord, I pray that you do walk with her closely and take her yoke

Momma, I have faith in your ability to endure; you're so strong
But, I know when so many things are happening it's scary
You're state of mind is so important as you heal; please have faith and have hope
When you lose that; we lose you… And you are too young for all that

Lord, bolster her heart and mind and heal her in Your timing… But, may Your timing be quick
I know You're here, I've never lost faith… And I never will
But, we need some signs, if possible right now; because she's losing hope
I'm trying to grasp onto hope and her to give her peace, but the chasm is widening

Lord, in simple terms, as those are all I have right now: Be near
I know you always are… But, make Yourself known and give her peace
Give her hope and give her strength; show her the future that lies ahead
And the knowledge that she has more to do here before she comes Home
