Monday Poem by Bob Nottage

Monday

I look forward to tap on a Monday
To packing my shoes and water
To hearing you other dancers say
We're just like lambs to the slaughter

It's into my shoes and on to the floor
flexing feet with a rattety tat tat tat
hop step and shuffle I practice some more
If only for real I could do it like that

Shall we start? asks Kate with a disarming smile
You're doing so well I thought something new
A nice triple time step will take quite a while
but I'll make it seem simple, especially for you

It's four tap steps with our right foot
If our left one can keep us upright
Then it's hop tap step with our left foot
Did our brain really remember that right?

It's easy for her so young and lithe
changing feet without missing a beat
but for us on the floor who've passed sixtyfive
change is lost twixt our brain and our feet

The hour goes so quickly it's time for the wall
As we warm down with hardly a twinge
We dream of an audience sat in the hall
Screaming, 'You're better than Fred and Ginge'

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I'm the only man in a tap dancing class of about fifteen, slightly more than young, ladies. It's so much fun and Kate, our teacher, is so enthusiastic it gave me the inspiration to sit in front of my PC and enthuse back.
