Monsters Poem by Neil Graham Marsden

Monsters

Rating: 5.0

Dear Father

I thought I would much like to crown you
with words that just need to be said
thoughts that should really stay silenced
though I feel you should hear them instead

Let you feel the destruction you managed
with one sweeping magnificent hand
make you taste how just one day of living
felt under your mighty command

You excelled passing casual glances
from a cold heart that love had disgraced
not once did your words re-assure me
of the warmth that pure hate had replaced

Did you fail on the day of my being
on that night did you wish me away
were you always so far in the distance
hoping I might be gone the next day

Were your children all objects of error
were we all just a dreadful mistake
did your blindness engulf you completely
that such love you would gladly foresake

Did your God tell you theft was your duty
just to take what you needed each day
to ignore all the pain you inflicted
as you frightened the nightmares away

Could your freezing heart never remind me
I had nothing to fear in my head
to pretend all monsters were imagined
not asleep in the next room instead

Dear Mother

How pitiful your loving be
to love some anagram of me
How you must tremble every night
hoping secrets stay from sight.

To wake each morning face the glass
as daily your deceits amass
To start each day with empty heart
regretting from the very start
