Mother Ganges Poem by RAJESH DEY

Mother Ganges

MOTHER GANGES

You are an entity elders sang paeans about
I thought you are one of that stuff
Where greatness has been thrust
Without any valid reason
But now I see you must be great
You widen and carry sameness
With gay abandon in your frolicsome course
You have attracted myriad souls to plunge
In you to wash their sins in your polluted waters
You have fed millions across millennia
But on you stream through effortlessly
You attract the saintly and sinner alike
So do the king and the pauper alike try being cleansed?
How doth you view souls on a cleansing spree
When the souls look inward perforce the happenstance of Mahamaya
Is it some contemptuous smile at the ignorance of the ilk
Is it benevolent kindness of a doting mother
I know you are not the one to melt at the foolish jumpiness
You want your child to learn and not have her placated
