Mother's Front Porch Poem by Bryan Corbett

Mother's Front Porch

I ran away from home
to find where I belonged
I ran far
I ran wide
I saw the four corners
of the world

there was love
and hate
there was truth
and lies
war
and peace
happiness
and heartbreak
there was hope
and despair
there was joy
and pain
night
and day
acceptance
and denial

pounding my head against the wall
making mistake
after mistake
after mistake

pounding my head against the wall
digging holes
deep
and deeper, still
until the son
could no longer be seen
rising on the horizon

pounding my head against the wall
just to crawl
out of them
only to dig
another
and
another
and another, still

pounding my head against the wall
I ran far
I ran wide
I saw the four corners
of the world
just to find where I belonged

exhausted,
I walked back home
and found myself
sitting
on my mother's front porch
