Much Too Late Poem by Adelina Amare

Much Too Late

I arrived much too late to the dance,
And I wondered if you were there by mere chance,
Or if you were waiting for me.
Yet I knew my absence was unnoticed by you.
That unfortunate reality set in, ringing loud and true,
But the bell of truth sang off key.

I strode over to greet you, but no words could I speak.
Under your expectant eyes, I felt daunted and weak.
I turned and ambled to a far wall, knowing I could not wish my shyness away.
I wondered if you could see my fear and my chagrin.
Then I heard your soft laugh, and my legs nearly caved in.
I knew you were laughing at my nervous display.

I gave myself the luxury and disappointment of looking at you.
You are the kind of man who haunts women's dreams with your beauty, this I knew.
I could see in your handsome face that you enjoyed making a young woman crumble 'neath your stare.
I strongly wished to dance with you, but I knew I was too callow for you and much too late.
It was known that there was only one woman you would dance with, the one brought to you by fate.
You were smitten with her the moment your fingers touched her silk hair.
