Mum. (I can remember)
I can remember….
I can remember your long black hair mum, the scent of you, the twinkle in your eye. I could never tell a fib to you, you could see right through a lie.
I can remember you in the garden mum, you loved to plant and grow, and how you’d read a teacup and the future you would know.
I can remember you in the kitchen, a red dog at your feet, how you liked to keep things tidy, how you liked to keep things neat.
I can remember how you loved to cook, ribs, stews, roasts and scouse, the home made jam from blackberries, oh how I loved it, in our house.
I can remember how you loved to dance and how you loved to sing, and if we had a party the soul of it you’d bring.
I can remember how you loved the pets, the dog, the cat, the birds, you were so one with nature, you were so good with words.
I can remember being sick mum, my head upon your knee, I can still feel your fingers in my hair, soft words to comfort me.
I can remember running home from school, with a prize from history, you showed me love and praise and said, how proud you were of me.
I can remember how I could have been a better son, I made you worry, I wasn’t fair. I am sorry if this time for you, stole the blackness from your hair.
I can remember how you loved me mum, and forgave my childish ways, you were the greatest mum of all and the pal of my cradle days.
I can remember holding your hand that day and then saying my last goodbye, the world changed for me that day mum, and lightning cracked the sky.
I love to go back home mum, to where we lived, these words I say are true. It’s because I have such treasured, happy memories, of being truly loved by you.
So please don’t think I won’t remember mum, I always know your near, sharing every time I smile or laugh, or sharing every single tear.
I can remember….x
