My rooster is beautiful:
It's oak-red beautiful.
A glamorous splendor
when in full stride.
It looks in full command
when it's among hens.
Should I keep it
for the day of the knife?
or for the agricultural show?
or for the amusement of hens?
Twice it missed
the morning crow,
and no chicks
resemble it—
though it's always busy:
tidbitting,
clucking,
strutting,
with its wing-drooping,
and hen-circling antics,
scaring off rival roosters.
