My Companion Poem by Joan Hart

My Companion

My constant companion,
A dull ache in my heart
No matter how far I run
We just can't seem to part

You’re the hesitance in my smile
The thoughts swimming in my head
All the possible scenarios
All the things left unsaid

A reminder of my faults,
Unforgiving and tough
Of all of the reasons
I’m not good enough

Even when I lie dormant
Stripped of distractions and protection
It curls up with me to sleep at night,
Always with me –
Your rejection.
