My Favorite Things Poem by Asmaa Alghamdi

My Favorite Things

My favorite things are always my new things.
My favorite dress is the one I bought most recently.
My favorite book is the one I'm reading these days.
My favorite bed sheets are the ones I changed into this week.
My favorite cup is the one my best friend sent me today as a gift.

Does that necessarily mean these are the best things that I know or own?
Not really.
I'm fresh out experimenting them for the first time.
I'm barely familiar with them.
And because I spend everyday with myself,
And my reflection is what meets my vision in the mirror,
I was never my favorite person.

I know how I look like.
I know how I smell like.
I know how I feel like.
I know how I sound like.
I know how I think and what I think about.
I know my good moments.
I know my humbling moments.
My smart, stupid, glorious and embarrassing moments.
I'm aware of it all, my flaws and charms.

I never spend a single second without being in my presence.
That's why I never choose myself as my favorite person.
But I always listen to myself when no one will.
I talk to myself, because I won't interrupt me.
I dance in a deranged way when I'm alone, because I won't judge me.
I cry alone when there are no shoulders around to lean on.
I laugh over my stupid jokes, because others misunderstand me as rude.

Hold on… no one has ever done any of those things to me.
Why am I still picking them as my favorite people?
I feel lonely when I'm around others more than when I'm in my bedroom floor.
No one will ever get me the way I do.
No one will ever get to see what I've been through but me.
I am my favorite person, and no one can take this title from me.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I was going through a really hard time in June this year. It was a kind of situation that I had to be understood, but I wasn't. I felt so alone during summer this year, and all I needed was a nod that signaled me being heard. Needless to say, I didn't get that. I just realized that I'm wasting my time trying to convince them. I decided to not do that. I wrote this poem back then. I think it's obvious that I don't write much. I'm a big activist over doing something just because you want to, even when you're not good at it. I hope this poem finds the people who need to understand themselves better. Thank you for taking the time to hear someone who never felt heard before. 🩵
