My Hometown Poem by Maya Iyer

My Hometown

Kerala

It was a two day journey
By train
The Calicut stations was clean
Surrounded by every green
You can imagine
The car would take us
Through quaint pathways
Paddy fields, Wordsworthian world
Women and men dressed alike
In white and gold
With white ash smeared on
Their forehead
The smell of brewing coffee
And fried banana chips
Evenings were reserved
For visits to the temple
Heavenly jasmine flowers
The sacred elephant at the entrance
Often a visit into the state forest
Abundant with birds and animals
Torrid rains, music and dance
Performances
Swinging off ropes from tall trees
Eating raw guavas
If it's heaven. It's here...it's here
