My Melanin Is Not My Sin. Poem by Rebecca Faith

My Melanin Is Not My Sin.

Shan't I comb my hair,
For the dark pigment in my skin
Makes a comb
Look like a gun

Shan't my car smell good,
For the dark pigment in my skin
Makes air freshener in my rear view mirror
Look like a misle

Shan't I listen to Billy Joel
For the dark pigment in my skin
Makes CD's
Look like a nuclear bomb

Because of the dark pigment in my skin
I am stopped by the lighter kind
For my darkness
Makes me the dirt
To the white!

My melanin,
Is not my sin!
My melanin,
Is my creator's perfection.

I can't change it,
I won't change it,
I pride in it,
You should too,
I am just like you,
Though my melanin is my beauty!

Rebecca Faith.
