My Offering Poem by John Bannister Tabb

My Offering

He asked me bread-the bread whereby alone
The beggar Love could live:-
I gave a
stone
.
He asked me fish, and I, a Passion's slave
(All that I had to give),
A
serpent
gave.
Then came his benediction: 'Lo, in Me,
A
Stone
retributive,
A
Serpent
see!'
