Nap Time - Poem by Ouida Nell Greene

SO PRECIOUS IS THE MEMORY
OF THE PHRASE NAP TIME
NAP TIME WILL ALWAYS BE DEAR TO ME
AS IT RELATES TO THE LATE HUSBAND OF MINE.

DURING THE LAST YEAR OF HIS LIFE
I TRIED TO BE VERY BRAVE, WEAR A SMILE
AND FILL HIS EVERY WISH, BE A LOVING WIFE
AND HELP HIM COPE, TOGETHER WE COULD COMPLETE HIS FINAL MILE!
WE KNEW HIS TIME WAS DRAWING NEAR
TO JOIN GOD IN HEAVEN ABOVE
NAP TIME WAS SO PRECIOUS SO DEAR
A WAY OF EXPRESSING OUR LOVE
A TIME FOR HIM TO TAKE A REST
FROM HIS EASY CHAIR
TO HIS BED HIS RESTING NEST
IT SEEMED LIFE WE SO UNFAIR
THAT HIS CANCER PROBLEM WOULDN'T HEAL
BUT HIS ATTITUDE WAS JUST GREAT
AND THO HIS HOBBIES CAME TO A STAND STILL
THERE WAS LOVE NO COMPLAINTS NO HATE.
HE WOULD NOD HIS HEAD
WHICH WAS A SIGNAL TO GO
TO HIS RESTFUL PLACE HIS BED
IT WAS NAP TIME AND I WOULD KNOW.

WHEN HIS FINAL FEW HOURS CAME
HE COULDN'T TALK BUT HE COULD MOVE HIS EYES
IN A WAY THAT I KNEW WE FELT THE SAME
AND I HAD TO REALIZE
THAT IT WAS HIS FINAL REQUEST.
HE WANTED OUR FINAL NAP TIME
I LAY DOWN BESIDE HIM TO TAKE OUR FINAL REST
WITHIN THE HOUR NAP TIME BECAME A PRECIOUS MEMORY OF MINE.
