Nerves Of A Word Poem by James Meaney

Nerves Of A Word

I met this girl as a junior,
she shot me down like an archer
& sailed through my heart and laid anchor
walked upon my dusty shores
Didn't linger but walked further
& got lost in the fields of clover
She would walk with me closer
Holding hands at the center of it all.
were on a hike, that never gets steeper
shes a sense of wonder, that makes you wonder
if she had multiple choices, would she choose me?
I'm sure she wouldn't leave, after all we've achieved
But it's my turn to leave harbor,
& sail through her seas & nerves.
Looking for the mysterious, four lettered word
that simply has been lost in the clutter
of a heart that has been swallowed under
& she'll say that she loves me, because I love her.
