Merciless
monsoon breaks
Westerly
winds strong
lift up
our old
and
ruffled up roof
from under
its tethers weak
It flaps
in the gusty wind
as if
a roosting falcon's
windswept
feathers
and wings
All
thudding
against the walls,
the wooden
rafters quiver
And
shatters
hopes and peace,
a perilous
thundershower
Rain invades
I shift
possessions
many a time
All
pots and pans
I place
under a dripping roof
here, there,
everywhere
And
I shout in despair
Oh! the sky
is crumbling
It's crumbling down
My voice
but drowns
in a thunderous
pour down
Mom
pretty tired
grumbles from
a smoky damp kitchen
blowing
hard and hard
onto the embers
dying
in a cheerless fire
And
Mopping the floor
her
sweat and tears
Rain or shine
Dad never
shifts position
Blows on new books
of all sorts
Dictionaries,
Oxford
Cambridge
World classics,
Tolstoy
Dickens
and so on
