Night Does Not Know Its Own Blackness Poem by Shalom Freedman

Night Does Not Know Its Own Blackness

Night does not know its own blackness
Nor do the stars know they are stars-
Only something within us
Only we humans as we are
Mark out and make the natural world real-

Oh how great and wondrous creatures we are,
Who make of so many mindless things
Meanings which live in us,
As the stars in the night are the light of our soul in the distance.
