No, You Poem by Edmond Sheehy

No, You

I get emotional. I start to cry.
When that happens I can't see while I drive.
I could careen into a tree and die.
It's by the grace of God I'm still alive.
I'd die before you to avoid the grief.
I just hope when I'm gone you'll find some peace.
I hope by and by you'll feel some relief.
The tension I've caused might find some release.
Maybe my passing would leave you in pain.
Perhaps it's selfish of me to go first.
Your heart absorbs me and all I contain.
You'd deftly brave the strain until you burst.
These dreary thoughts need not excite dismay.
I am glad we have had even one day.
