Nocturne, Return Poem by Jack Sedman

Nocturne, Return

In those days
when I had forgotten how
to smile
each movement exact
clumsy and forced.
During
that time
each day I saw you
met, sighed:
loved you.

all the cold rain
the pain of the sky
split weeping
trembling
it sings
notes touch the ground
so fine
the breath of silk
carress of the breeze
and I will see
Will see you
again.

and he asks:
is this the Paris I once knew?
that Chopin nocturne along
the sides of the Seine, relaxed
frenzy of light.
Notre-Dame by the moon
and the breeze
the breeze hot and vacant
rustles through hair
across palms down
book open, brown
polished stone.
sunlight flicks and
strays, wanders
round, returns
again.
The emotion
of a beautiful death, one sumptuous breath
that Chopin nocturne.

Float the melody of
alleyways, subtle and crisp
as the night. Soft murmur
dead hush.
it brushes past
slides away
come back
nocturne, return
return, nocturne
The emotion
just edges away, out of sight
Moves
and cries to follow, smiles
and gazes back. But
I can’t keep up
can’t write
think
melt that fast

it goes, flows
as I fall, fall beautifully
away into
soft nothing
whispering sky,
it sings!
Petals drop
Notes fall
Your face
never changes through all
this, my love
stands still.
