Nothing Any More Poem by Paul Reed

Nothing Any More

My heart does not beat with the certainty
That it did when I was young
I never used to listen to it then;
I knew it was there, and working
That was all I needed to know

Now I strain an ear to listen
Feel the wobbly pulse
Slump when I feel a missed beat
Dread the heavy thud
Now I know nothing any more.
