Now That You Know What You Have What Are You Going To Do About It? Poem by Claude H Oliver II

Now That You Know What You Have What Are You Going To Do About It?

You've been to see the doctor
For a much needed check
The pain you've been having
Has disrupted your life
You're examined from head to toe
Poked, squeezed and pressed
Have blood drawn, samples taken
'Your test results will be here next week;
I should have a diagnosis.'
You leave with nagging uncertainty
Your unwelcome acquaintances
'Don't know' and 'Not sure'
Invite themselves to your bed
A week of indecision and doubt
Sleep is fleeting and restless

Finally, you come to hear the words
The words which may change your life
'I have good news and bad news
Bad news - it's cancer,
Good news - it's early'
Then that question we all must face

Now that you know what you have
What are you going to do about it?

Close in and hide in fear?
Share with those you love?
Plan your future in denial?
Take life by the horns and face it?

What to do
Own your fear
Share those fears
Ask for help
Plan but don't deny
You're already on life's horns
The horns you've had since birth
