Oh, Perhaps You Spoke Too Soon Poem by Sami Gjoka

Oh, Perhaps You Spoke Too Soon

And when he had arrived it appeared as if the night
Was simply a woman that gave birth
Leaving him there, all alone
Like a child
Then she left,
As if by the shining light
Expelled farther from the earth.

There he stood and stood in doubt,
Looking, fearful, at your door,
Feeling fat and feeling tired
Feeling ages, ages old,
He kept staring at his girth,

He was trembling in the cold.

Then he called

From the depths of the sleep slowly rose your weak voice
Became laughter and the joy of the mutual mirth
And he felt no longer uncertain or sad;
And then shone a light in your room above,
Then he sensed your body,
Rising from the bed.

After that you said, “Give me an hour
I need to get ready,
To jump in the shower.”
He felt as if fainting,
Losing all his power,
Tired from his trip.

Tired and exhausted, driving from afar
Coming to Detroit from DC nonstop
He feels now dizzy and he needs to rest
And he hopes and pleas
Wishes and begs
That his little baby
Doesn’t come too fast
Doesn’t rush too soon!

And yet strange it seemed
Not pleasant, not snappy
Lacking all the urge
That makes girls happy
That in any case
Love to feel the haste
Even if themselves
Are so often tardy.

Look the fireplace,
Ambers gone to ashes;
The fountains of love
Drained and dried of splashes.

Now he must go, get himself a room
Go to rest and sleep and to bathe and shave,
Aware that you deserve better look
Not that drowsy man, risen from the grave.

Let him look a little younger
And look stronger
And feel brave
And feel bolder to get closer

Didn’t you use to say that you can wait forever
And not tire from waiting
Or did love use loyalty
As its lever
And its baiting?

Oh, perhaps you spoke too early
While girl and not woman
But things change fast and hasty
When flower is full of pollen.
