On Discovering An Old Photo Of Myself Poem by Shalom Freedman

On Discovering An Old Photo Of Myself

I don't remember myself
Looking that way
What can be the connection
Between the dark-haired young man
And the grey and white scraggly bearded self
I now know myself to be?

I know we are the same person
But I do not feel
I ever was that dark haired being-

Apparently,
Life is having more faces
Than we can ever know at once
And losing each one of them
Before we have the one
We ourselves cannot see.
