Soldier's On the Wall
Amid the dark of night
When the Cannon cease their raucous noise
The murky dews come once again
Upon the wall of stone
Standing in doorway shadows
The Soldiers hear Earth in its turning
and Aging Timbers in their moan
Sensing the rose petal hue of dawn
On the edge of a mourning sky
They survive the Night
So that their bones might embrace the warm
Before they die
At last the watching having been worth the while
The tour of duty over they can finally ‘Go home.
