One Day Poem by Sunita Chandla

One Day

I thought it was going to be a great day
Instead a lot of surprises came my way
Some were great enough to help me touch the skies
Others were on the way to open my eyes

After years again I chose to be at my Mom’s place
To reminisce, my maiden birth days
Sisters and mom talked about the place I was born
To the extent of the Gifts of some pretty frocks
that were showered on me to adorn.

Till late in the evening right- from the early morn
My nieces and nephews sang the birthday song
Extending greetings and blessings on the phone
To remind me that I was never alone

Dishes were prepared much to my choice
It simply doubled up my happiness and joys
Hours seemed to be on the run
While episodes and laughter were together spun

The door bell announced that my husband had landed
But today it broke my heart to see him empty handed
I had never ever doubted his grace
And wondered why it was such case

I felt embarrassed and not at ease
Somehow managed any reaction to freeze
Kept my chin up for the rest of the day
For it was my ‘Happy Birthday!

I just learnt a lesson today
Expectations should be buried away
My heart shouldn’t cry out with any ache….
Birthdays can always be celebrated sans cake!

Now that I am Fifty two……
I’ll take charge of my happiness too!
Please don’t think…if anything went wrong
God whispered….’ ‘Become more strong’’! ! !
