One Night And No More Poem by Mark. A Heathcote

One Night And No More

I've taken you to my heart.
I've seen what's left when the wanting is done.
One night and no more —
panic stations at the bedroom door.
My sanity I've sacrificed before,
with the fervor of a plaintiff on day release to even up the score.

Mark, yet another day on a self-imposed prison wall.
One night and no more,
a defenseless stray
that can't stay any longer than a single night,

but purrs until the morning light.
A heart shrinking to a grain of sand,
hoping to become the irritation that forms a pearl in a woman's hand.
But I'm afraid even I can't be saved,
even if she wants rescuing too.

One night and no more,
defenseless strays
that can't stay any longer than a single night,
but purr until the morning light.
