Pancakes Poem by Michael Crowder

Pancakes

Here's to a traditional day
namely Shrove Tuesday as we know
when pancake racings underway
then tomorrow, Ash Wednesday shows
pause for thought as Lent takes its turn.
Buying whip and top from Grants shop
Was this seasonal toy of fun
Window breaker, carrot, turnip tops
played daily for weeks to come.
But pancakes - sugar orange jam,
I never cared what was on top
as long as Mum made them quickly,
tossed, and served them, while they were hot.
