Person Poem by Caitlin Robinson

Person

A single speck toward freedom fell
Marched for miles until he fell
With a last belated breath, that breath fell
Down an endless tunnel which also fell
Upon the ground in which he stood
A child descends into his arms
And fell who from heaven had swelled
Towards the ground
To rescue the one
Who fell

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
When I started writing this poem, I was not really focusing on any particular story line until I read the poem again and realized that it was about war and what happens to children within it. The soldier as mentioned in this poem, had been walking for miles and miles- exhausted and dehydrated he stood barely breathing and barely standing in the bloody fields. Until all hope was lost and earth felt as though it were covered in flames, swallowing every single man who marched through the battles.

The solider in this poem is about to give up- to die- until he sees a child fall from heaven- hope disguised as an innocent child. A child who had never seen war, death, limbs being torn off. Horrible images that one wouldn't be able to come back from. The solider sees the child fall from heaven and despite his complete exhaustion, musters every muscle in his body to capture this child and rescue it from harm. The ground- that has been painted with the bodies of the fallen soldiers- the child must not touch it. The child must not fall upon it and the soldier fears that if this were to happen- all hope would be lost.

In a way, by capturing the child as the child falls, he is capturing himself. He was about to give up on life until hope fell from heaven. There is always hope and the solider did not realize that until he himself had been saved.
