I am surprised you describe poetry with such vivid and strong images. But I surmise that poetry is such that its being defined will never be exhausted. I can understand the “going on and on forever” and the contrasts of “dark with fear or light and pale”. Of all these, water is the most destructive: “swift and brutal leaving nothing in its path.”
A poem worth remembering.
