Portree Awakening Poem by Laurence Overmire

Portree Awakening

On a rainy morning
Full of portended
Gloom
What could be more
Delightful
Than little schoolchildren
Crossing the thoroughfare

Like the Beatles
On Abbey Road

See them skip across
In their bright
Red slickers
Hand in hand
Buddy to buddy
From one safe sidewalk
To the other

Their teachers giving
Guidance and direction
Watching with careful
Concern
The beaming yellow
Macks on their backs
Shining like beacons of love

There is something
Inviolable here
Universal and true
Kindness passed
In the simplest of acts
From one generation
To another

Peace will come to the
World this way

Some more eloquent than I
Have said:

'And in the end
The love you take
Is equal to the love
You make'

If only we would
Let it be.
