Prayer Of Pain. Poem by JOHN ZILLE

Prayer Of Pain.

How long can I endure this pain,
The agony to cease?
The days, the months, the years go by
My god, grant me your peace.

So gradually this came to me,
This cross for me to bear,
The weight of it is crushing me,
No hope, only despair.

Too long, O lord these terrible days
Each second, minute, hour.
Too much the pain, the helpless fear
The horrible endless sorrow.

Your grace, o lord grant me this day,
To walk this hopeless road,
The strength, the grace to do you will,
To drag this heavy load.

This blood and bone was once my friend,
The means for me to live.
But now it’s only endless trial,
Too much, too hard, no more to give.

A prisoner in this tortured flesh,
I long to know your peace,
A tired, weak and empty shell,
Oh lord please let it cease!
