Private Heart Poem by Imogene Wagner

Private Heart

Upon the silver screen the news was shown;
A train derailed and fifty dead,
The closed-faced Commies saying No again,
And Europe's hungry children clutching bread.

The gaunt eyed Jew and Arab armed with guns,
A newer bomb – the peace impugned –
Head bent she wept in shame for her small soul
That grieved no hell beyond her own heart wound.

(October 1948)
