Promise? Poem by Morgan McKelvey

Promise?

Am I beautiful because of genes
Or 'Cause that's what you made me?
Do I owe my luck to faith and things
Or hope you always gave me?
Do I let go of the heart you stole
And say that you're forgiven?
Or should I pretend I have no soul
And curse the town you live in?
Should I focus on the bitterness
And jealousy that binds me?
Should I see us as a jumbled mess
And leave the past behind me?
Do I blind myself to truth 'cause I
Am scared of what is fiction?
Lord, here I go. Again I try
To soothe my heart with diction.
